  • Inspired by a new, thoughtful comment to an old Would You Rather… I decided it was time for a fresh debate.

Would you rather give up all desserts for the rest of your life OR eat only plain rice, water and vitamins for one year?

    1. Mary Says:

I’m tempted to say the rice for one year, but then I wonder, is there any guarantee that I’d live much longer than that one year? If I could have assurance that my life will be a long one, then yes, I’d take the rice. These questions remind me of a French comedian who has a sketch with a “would you rather” question, here it is: Would you rather have 2-meter long foam rubber arms or 8 ducks that follow you everywhere (and that would be absolutely everywhere) for the rest of your life (of course I’d pick the ducks if I could eat them).

    2. Caroline Says:

Mary… that is hilarious! I love a universal game of Would you Rather? I try to make them food related for this site but I have a huge repertoire! This one is going in it. Thanks! And for the record… I guess I would take, the arm?! eeek

    3. Claire Says:

I have such a sweet tooth… I’d have to go with rice for a year. Plain rice? Or can I add a little butter and pepper?

    4. Luisa Says:

Man, this is a good one. I really had to think about it. I think I’d have to forgo the desserts. I can’t believe I’m saying that! But it’s true. I don’t think I could handle three weeks, much less a year, of plain rice and water.

    5. Mary Says:

Caroline, careful, it would be both arms! My husband says he’ll take the no desserts as long as he can still have sweet things for breakfast and fruit as snacks. I’m with him on that one. Can you tell that we’re the kind of people who try to weasel out of things?

    6. Molly Says:

What a toughie! But gosh, I think I’d go with the plain rice and water. No WAY you’re getting me to give up a lifetime of desserts. Ain’t no way.

    7. Scott Says:

No brainer. Is there any such thing as a savory tooth? If there is, I’ve got one.

    8. Aoife Says:

I was a vegetarian for a year and I survived. I pick rice.

By the way, here’s a question for a future Would You Rather: cake or death?

    9. Ed Says:

I’m going with the ducks, and my partner is going with the foam arms. He’s having the rice diet, but I’m not sure how he’s going to feed himself with those big floppy arms. I’m losing the desserts: pastries for morning and afternon tea though, and there’s nothing wrong with five-cup salad in the middle of the meal. Oh wait, yes there is.

    10. missv Says:

This is a hard one but I’d give up the desserts. A year on a rice diet sounds totally unbearable. Like Ed, I’d be capitalising on morning and afternoon tea.

    11. Erica Says:

hi caroline! i’ve been subscribing to your blog for a while now, but i’ve never posted before…until i saw this question and i just felt like i HAD to answer.=) i’d like to think i’m a pretty hard core rice fan..i have to have it everyday as part of at least 1 meal…but just the prospect of nothing but rice and water and vitamins is enough to send me screaming for the hills. i’d probably last 2 weeks max. so no desserts for a year for me then *sigh*

    12. Caroline Says:

Friendly readers… you have all made my weekend by replying to my silly question. It is a hard one and I know I have a winner when so many are waffling and struggling! I usually cop out by not answering my own Would You Rather and to be honest, my answer on this one has changed depending on my day and mood. For now, I am saying white rice and would probably try to accompany that year of rice with a total change of scenery and pace…. I work with a lot of chefs and food companies, including chocolate, and there is no WAY I could be around it all the time eating only rice.

    13. mav Says:

rice. all the way. one year is nothing. bring it on!

    14. Stephanie Says:

I’d do the rice too. One year in exchange for a lifetime of whatever you want….is worth it to me. It would also make you REALLY REALLY appreciate the desserts, and all foods for that matter, once the year is over, something I sometimes forget to do as I gobble down my meals.
