I'm pretty sure that food products don't taste the same today because they've reformulated them so much over the years to reduce product costs and increase margins. So, stuff like sugar and salt and corn products make it to the front of the ingredient line, and nasty cocoa butter has become popular too.

I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who has had this experience. I adored 'Fruity Pebbles' when I was a kid. Every now and then I get an urge to relive my youth by purchasing a box, but the joy ends shortly after I stuff my mouth with the stuff.

The sugary cereals I loved so much as a kid seem to leave a yucky film on the top of my mouth. Why don't I remember that happening when I was young? Was it because my mom never bought these cereals, so I was simply so excited to eat them when visiting my grandparents that I overlooked this problem? Or, have the cereal makers changed their recipes and this problem didn't exist when I was a kid?

Sigh... I guess it just proves that you can't go back home, so to speak...

I've been there. I was there. I'm a college student who suffers from both nostalgia and the lack of room for my mixer: Thus no homemade delicacies. Hostess is not your friend. You did the right thing.

Ha! Its always a little sad (and perhaps relieving) to find out that things don't taste as good as our memories of them do. I feel that way about Cadbury Creme eggs at Easter. Is it just me, or did they used to be so much tastier? You know, then I start to wonder, maybe they really DID taste better when we were kids. It wouldn't surprise me if companies like this have cut many corners in quality over the past 15-20 years in order to make the same product more cheaply. I'd love to know for sure...

Thanks for the memories Whipped! Next time we need to just turn the oven on and get busy baking - no matter the hour. I'd love to know if anyone would share some "quick-fix" ideas when a fresh baked treat is what you crave......hummmmm

I have the same feeling towards box cake mix now. I can't stomach it! It's not so much the sugar, but the artificial ingredients that freak my taste buds out. I recently bought the little package of donuts from a kwik e-mart after some late night drinks and devoured those, but I blame that on the drunk munchies :) But I can't return to the land of Twinkies. Sadly, those days are gone for me!

Oh I so agree! Pretty much every candy/snack I loved as a kid is not disgustingly too-sweet. The only ones that have survived are the sour ones like Sweet Tarts, apparently I still like too-sour, just not too-sweet! Those cupcakes with the curlicues almost killed me!

I've had the same experience with kid's cereal. Cookie Crisp? Gotta have it! Fruity Pebbles? They're the best! Crunch Berry? Delicious! Once the milk is poured and the first spoon hits the mouth, one realizes that it's all garbage. We'll never be able to recapture the the unparalleled joy of Saturday morning cartoons and sugary cereal. Ah youth.
