I used to dream of having a fruit tree in my yard. After having learned from a friend just how many pears his tree produces, I’ve decided that I am happy being friends of people with fruit trees in their yards.

I came home a few weeks ago to find a massive bag of pears on my doorstep. A friend of mine has a tree and doesn’t know what to do with his bounty. He estimated that he has over 1,000 pears each season! Helping him find a use for his yield is just the sort of project I love. While I waited a week or two for the firm fruits to soften, some of them sat nestled in my new Villeroy & Boch bridge bowl in the center of my table. Each morning as I ate breakfast, I happily gazed at my pears in the fresh morning light, dreaming up all the ways I could put them to work in my kitchen. I have already cooked up more of the Pear Ginger Compote that I made with last year’s harvest and have generously heaped it atop my oatmeal, stirred some into yogurt and paired it with this apple cider pork dish. As for the rest of the pears, I foresee some poaching, cinnamon-y baked goods and possibly even canning in my near future. Do you have favorite pear recipes to recommend?

Envious of your pear buddy- I need to go to Michigan to get access to similarly endowed friends! My favorite pear recipe is a bit of work but the payoff was incredible. Dorie Greenspan’s wine-poached pear tart with pistachio pastry cream. So so good.

I dream of having a lemon tree in the backyard and peachtrees lining my future driveway. I hope to have kind neighbors, who will help themselves to all the fruit they can consume.

As someone who has thousands of Asian pears coming from 2 trees, might I suggest an upside down pear tart, or poached pears over vanilla ice cream (best when they’re ripened on the tree and the weather is still warm, around Labor Day)? Also, as your readers seem to want homemade gift ideas, I’ll be gifting Asian pear ginger jam and pear butter. Maybe Miss Whipped will receive a jar if she’s lucky?
