Fresh Peach Frozen Yogurt (A Healthy Treat!)

Peaches are my favorite fruit. They’ve always been my number one, but to be honest, it’s a volatile romance. When peaches are at their peak, there is nothing like them but so often they are overly firm, flavorless or worst of all mealy. You know the feeling—knife poised, peeling back that fuzzy skin, waiting with bated breath to discover if it’s going to be heartbreak or bliss. When you hit the jackpot, you are rewarded with an intoxicating fragrance, sweet dripping juices, and perfect golden flesh.

The one time I know I’ll win the peach lottery is August, during peak Michigan peach season. I grew up in West Michigan and though I live in Chicago now, I still make my way over the border in search of those succulent gems. This year we stopped at Sawyer Garden Center, where you can smell the peaches before you turn the corner into the open-air fruit market. Just inside enormous baskets brimming with peaches lined the tables. My heart skipped a beat and I salivated in anticipation.

I was trying to show some semblance of self-control, reaching for a few small baskets, when my teenager confidently loaded the cart with an entire bushel. Game over. The peaches came home with us, filling the car with their heady aroma as the late-summer sun warmed the peaches through the windows.

And so the peach gluttony began. We baked multiple cobblers. We spent a half-day making peach jam, ending with twelve glorious jars—one to savor each month while we wait for the next harvest. And finally, we landed on a new favorite.

For my 50th birthday, a dear friend surprised me with an ice cream maker—a shiny new toy to feed my kitchen machinations. I’ve always leaned more frozen yogurt than ice cream. (MANY of my first outings when I got my driver’s license in the 90’s were to TCBY). Naturally, one of the first thing we churned was a batch of frozen yogurt.

Sweet ripe peaches, a touch of lemon juice, tangy Greek yogurt, and just enough sugar to let the fruit shine. Cold and creamy, but light and refreshing. It tastes exactly like summer should.

There may still be a week or two to snag delicious peaches (nectarines will do) at your market. If you have an ice cream maker, try this recipe and consider storing a few batches. Suspended in frozen yogurt may be the perfect way to preserve your perfect summer peaches.

Description

Tangy Greek frozen yogurt is a PERFECT way to preserve your fresh summer peaches.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 cups plain Greek frozen yogurt (1 large 32-oz container)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 large or 3 small fresh, ripe peaches

Instructions

  1. Peel fresh, ripe peaches and cut into chunks.
  2. Slightly mash the peaches to release juices.
  3. Add the sugar and lemon juice to the bowl.
  4. Stir in the Greek yogurt until all ingredients are combined.
  5. Using an ice cream maker, churn the peach frozen yogurt until finished. Store in the refrigerator for a few hours if needed to firm it up.
  6. Serve with additional fresh peaches, or topped with granola!

Notes

  • I used whole milk, or full fat frozen yogurt. Low-fat works as well.
  • Nectarines also work with this recipe.
  • Thawed frozen peaches can be substituted but will not have the same flavor.
