Tuesday, November 3, 2020 is going to be a historic day. The pressure has been building during this unprecedented election and most Americans are feeling anxiety. Some will be elated, some will be devastated, and most will be scared.

Whether you are going to watch the results, facing reality head-on, or bury your head somewhere to avoid it, you may want to clutch a delicious cocktail to get you through.

Here are 10 election-themed cocktails that I’ve found to suit your mood, lift your spirits, drown your sorrows, dull your nerves, or just help you survive Election Night 2020.

The Americano Cocktail

All Americans are going through this together. This cocktail are for those who are undecided (Ha! Do those exist this time around?) or those who believe that unity is possible. The Americano cocktail is made with Campari, which has a bitter taste. Appropriate for this period in American history. It is a little hard to swallow.

According to The Spruce Eats, this cocktail is mentioned in Bond movies, so drinking The Americano does double duty as a shout-out to the recently deceased Sean Connery.

The Americano Cocktail Recipe

1 1/2 ounces Campari
1 1/2 ounces sweet vermouth
1 to 2 ounces soda water (to taste)
Garnish: lemon twist or orange slice

Biden Thyme Cocktail

Herbaceous cocktails are my favorite. Kudos to Coppercraft Distillery for this clever concoction. I’m a huge fan of herb-infused drinks and Biden sure has been around a long thyme… so, it seems like the perfect herb for his cocktail.

Biden Thyme Cocktail Recipe

2 oz Coppercraft Citrus Vodka
.75 oz blueberry syrup
.25 oz thyme syrup
1 oz lemon juice

Combine ingredients with ice in shaker. Shake and strain into rocks glass. Add ice and garnish with thyme spring and lemon wheel.

The Trump Cocktail

Really, no Trump cocktail would be complete without some edible 24-karat gold leaf garnish. But, if you don’t happen to have any in your pantry, you will have to do without. This Trump cocktail combines vodka and Kahlua with a splash of heavy cream and an orange twist. Okay, okay… you got me. This is actually a White Russian with orange skin.

The Trump Cocktail Recipe

2 ounces vodka
1 ounce Kahlúa
1 splash heavy cream
Garnish: orange twist

Add the vodka and Kahlua to a rocks glass with ice. Stir and top with heavy cream. Garnish with orange twist.

I Can’t Pear it Anymore! Cocktail

Don’t roll your eyes, please. This is a pun-ny post, and you know it. Let’s find levity where we can! This appropriately seasonal recipe yields a small pitcher of pear and spice-infused wine so you can sip and refill, or share with other members of your household.

I Can’t Pear it Anymore Cocktail Recipe

2 cup of dry white wine (Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc)
1/4 cup brandy
1/4 cup pear nectar
2 Tablespoons honey
1 fresh pear, cored and sliced
5 whole cloves
Garnish: Star anise pods, cinnamon sticks

Combine the wine, brandy, pear nectar, and honey in a large pitcher. Stir until honey dissolves. Add slices of fresh pear and cloves. Ideally, let this mixture sit in the fridge for 4 hours or up to 1 day. Serve over ice garnished with fragrant star anise pods and/or cinnamon sticks.

El Presidente Cocktail

If things go your way, you may want to toast the new President. Unfortunately, you may need to bookmark this recipe and come back to it a few days later if we have to wait for the mail-in ballots to be counted. I think we all hope it doesn’t come to that.

El Presidente Cocktail Recipe

2 ounces rum (gold)
¾ ounce Cointreau (or triple sec)
¾ ounce dry vermouth
⅛ teaspoon grenadine (or more if you want a darker drink)
Garnish: lemon twist
